MAJOR DISASTER OF OOTY

                                               MAJOR  DISASTER OF OOTY

Ooty faced the major disaster in the year 2009.Heavy rains triggered a series of landslides in Ooty, Coonoor and Kotagiri regions of the Nilgiris, about 600km from Chennai, killing 42 people in the past 48 hours. Most of the people were killed after the landslides slammed into their houses. Seven of a family died at Acchanakal hamlet near Ooty,” a source in district collector Anandrao Vishnu Patil’s office told DNA. “We have set up relief camps in the three regions and nearly 1,000 people have been sheltered there.”

The slides and uprooted trees also cut off access to Nilgiris via Mettupalayam and the district collector asked tourists to stay away from Ooty. “The approach road to Ooty from Tamil Nadu via Mettupalayam has been severely damaged. We received 310cm rain this morning. After 1978, this is the biggest rain-related disaster in the district. The road via Kotagiri is in slightly better shape which is why traffic has been redirected through it.

“However, smaller landslides and fallen trees are also blocking parts of the road. At this point, we can only say that there’s been a lot of damage but it’s difficult to say how much. It will be some time before we begin to assess the losses to roads, houses, crops and other property,” the sources said. The state government has announced a cash relief or Rs1 lakh each to the kin of those killed. Chief minister M Karunanidhi asked agricultural minister Veerapandi Arumugham and small industries minister Pongalur Palanichami to visit the district to assess the damage.

MUDUMALAI TIGER RESERVE

                                                  MUDUMALAI TIGER RESERVE

Mudumalai Tiger Reserve is about 240 Km from Bangalore, about 90 Km from Mysore, about 68 Km from Ooty and about 124 Km from Calicut by road. The reserve straddles the Ooty -Mysore interstate national highway, roughly midway between the two cities and thus could be approached with equal facility either way. Of Ooty, another approach is through extremely steep ghat road via Kalhatti having 36 hair-pin bends on a narrow road, but with a truncated distance of approximately 40 Km.

In April 2007, the Tamil Nadu state government declared Mudumalai to be a tiger reserve, under section 38V of the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972, in an effort to conserve the country's dwindling tiger populations. Consequently, about 350 families living in the core area were evicted from the park and given INR 10 Lacs compensation. Those in the 5 km buffer area around the park fear they, too, will be evicted; nobody will be dislodged from the buffer zone. In an episode, some people in this zone will become trackers and guides to enhance their income through eco-tourism.

Approximately 15 cat species in India, four live in Mudumalai: Bengal tiger, Indian leopard, jungle cat and leopard cat. There are 44 to 80 tigers in the Mudumalai forest. The original largest tiger population in India comprises the Mudumalai tigers. These tigers are a breeding source for populating the northern and eastern parts of the Western Ghats. The population exists at high density due to the high density of prey species thriving in its deciduous forests

OOTY STONE HOUSE

                                                        OOTY STONE HOUSE

Stone house was the first bungalow constructed in Ooty. It was built by John Sullivan in 1822 and was called Kal Bangla by the tribals. Today it is the official  residency of the Principal of the Government Arts College Ooty. The tree in front of the bungalow is known as the Sullivan's oak.

By 1822, Sullivan had started building Stonehouse in what was then known as Wotokymond, acquiring land from the Todas at one rupee an acre. He would quickly corner huge tracts of land, many times more than all the other European settlers put together. All the while, Sullivan was peppering his superiors in Madras with letters about the unusually temperate and healthy climate in the Nilgiris and its suitability as a sanatorium. By 1828, there were some 25 European houses, not to mention churches and the houses of immigrants from the plains. This was also the year that Ooty was made a military cantonment. Sullivan's dream of making it a sanatorium for British troops had been fulfilled, but the Government's action meant that Ooty would no longer be in his control but in that of his rival Major William Kelso.

The Stone House in Ooty is one of the most significant and ancient monuments of Ooty that was inadvertently instrumental in the further development of Ooty into a prominent British and European Summer alternative that fostered the Hill Station to presently become one of the most visited Tourist targets in India and worldwide.

The Ooty Stone House was the first building or rather Mansion to be constructed in a modern and yet colonial style in Ooty that indirectly caused further modernization of Ooty with numerous elegant cottages crop up showcasing similar colonial architecture.

ORIGIN OF UDAGAMANDALAM

                                                        THE ORIGIN OF UDAGAMANDALAM

The origin of the name Udagamandalam is obscure. The name probably changed under British rules to Udagamandalam from Ootacamund, and later was shortened to Ooty. Ooty is situated in the Nilgiri hills. The tribes were the first to occupy Ooty.

The beautiful botanical paradise was first brought to the public eye by John Sullivan, Collector of Coimbatore district in 1819. But prior to this in 1812, the first Englishmen who were sent up the Nilgiris by the Collector of Coimbatore, were Mr. Keys, Assistant Revenue Surveyor, and his Assistant, McMahon. They made their way via Dananayakan Kottai to Arcade and the existing village of Dead, and penetrated as far as Kallatti, the lower level of North Ooty, but never set their eyes on the beautiful valley in which Ooty lay. After Keys' visit, there was no further expedition until 1818 when J.C.Whish and N.W.Kindersly (Asst. and second Asst. to the Collector of Coimbatore respectively) went up by the Dananayakan Kottai-Dead route, crossed the plateau in a south-western direction and descended by the Sundapatti pass from Manjakombai to the Bhavani valley and then went back to Coimbatore.

Ooty is rightly described as "QUEEN OF HILLS" by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, now sprawls over an area of 36 sq km with a number of tall buildings cluttering its hill slopes. It is situated at an altitude of 2,204 meters above sea level. Ooty still woos people from all over India as well as foreign countries right through summer, and sometimes in the winter months too. An added attraction for the mountain train journey on a ratchet and pinion track.
