The major tribes of Nilgiris are are the Toda,  Badaga, Kota, Irula, and Kurumba. The old Tamil work Silappadikram states that the Chera king senguttavan, who ruled during the 2nd century CE, on this way to the Himalayas in the north, stayed in the Nilgiris and witnessed the dance of the Kannadigas. After that Ooty was fully occupied by the Toda along with other hill tries who coexisted through sensationalists with the trade. The Toda people were known for raising water buffalo.


The Region was ruled by various dynasties like Satavahanas, Kadambas, Rashtrakutas, Cheras, Gangas, Cholas, Hoysalas, the Vijayanagara empire and the Rajas of Ummaattur, In the eighteenth century.The region was captured by Tipu Sultan, before the lands were ceded to the British East Indian Company, according to the British empire Ooty was the summer capital of Madras Presidency, Today the nearby town of Wellington is home to the Madras Regiment of the Indian Army.

The people of Ooty totals to a population of 762,141 residents according to the survey of 2001 with 59.65% of urban dwellings. The literacy rate of Ooty is 81.44% considered as one of the highest in the State of Tamil Nadu. The various tribes that maintained and preserved their own distinct cultures and traditions constitute the real wealth of the nigiri and add to be the beauty of the hills.
